March 22nd, 2024 - Presumpscot Chat

Friday, March 22nd, 2024

Hello, Presumpscot Community!

This was another amazing week at Presumpscot. So many things are happening, from learning about maple sugaring and natural disasters to BIPOC Student Union to the Newspaper Club to our first PreK play (at least since I have been principal).

Solar Eclipse:

The next huge event will happen on Monday, April 8th. If you want to learn more about this event, check out this NYT article.

The Foundation for PPS will be supporting this event by purchasing eclipse glasses for all students. If a PTO/FTO has already purchased these and the orders cannot be canceled, we will have extras, and these can be used for staff.

We will also work with our transportation department to make sure bus drivers are informed and to delay bus departure by 5-10 minutes so that elementary children can remain under the supervision of school staff during the event.

This is a fascinating scientific phenomenon and an opportunity for us to engage young learners in the awesomeness of the world and science.

Grade 5 Natural Disasters Expedition:

Fifth graders from Mr. Wright's class met in the library with both first grade classes this week to share their final products from their Expedition Study of Natural Disasters. These students learned about natural disasters such as flooding, sea level rise, and wildfires, as these events and others, while rare in the past, are increasing in frequency in Maine. Tsunamis, earthquakes, and hurricanes were also studied and also while rare, have occurred. After being assured of their safety, first graders then paired with the older students, who shared their new knowledge via their handwritten descriptions of disasters and Public Service Announcements (PSAs) created using Canva and AI, intended to help people understand how to survive a particular natural disaster.

Want to know what to do in the event of a tsunami? Or an earthquake? Or even if we have those in Maine? Ask your first or fifth grader. Or request the PSAs that they wrote. You never know.

FTO Corner:

Hello everyone, we had a packed agenda meeting this past Tuesday! We discussed Staff Appreciation Week coming up at the beginning of May. We'd like to offer raffle options to staff through the week, with the drawing on Friday, May 10th. If you or someone you know would be willing to donate a gift card or new item to be raffled off, please reach out to the Presumpscot FTO at presumpscotfamily@gmail.com. Some items already donated are: Yeti Lunch Box, Drink Tumbler, Grill, and a variety of local gift cards. Dates to look out for:

Conversation with the Constituents:

The community can engage with members of the School Board on Monday, March 25th from 5:00-6:00 pm at Presumpscot Elementary School.

ESSA Dashboard:

Portland Public Schools uses assessment data to help inform our practices at the district, school, classroom, and individual levels for our students. Each year the Maine Department of Education issues a report for each district and each school. These reports summarize state assessments and other achievement data about our students. The report also contains information about teacher qualifications. The ESSA Data Dashboard at the Maine Department of Education allows you to review report cards for schools and districts across the state. The ESSA Data Dashboard has recently been updated with information from the 2022-2023 school year.
