Math Team

Coached by David Millard

The Presumpscot Math Team has begun!  Every fall we start practicing for the upcoming meets. There are four regional meets held at the Expo and three Portland-only meets, held at various Portland elementary schools. Our first meet was a regional meet at the Expo on October 30th, from 2-4 p.m.  Our first Portland meet will be held at Reiche School on the morning of December 6.

The Math team is open to all 5th Graders at Presumpscot School. There is no try-out. We meet twice a week; once after school and once during recess. Each practice is an hour long. The Math Team requires a high level of commitment from its members. It is also expected that math team members will be cooperative, willing, have solid arithmetic skills, and enjoy a challenge.  Math meets are given in three rounds; an arithmetic section, a geometry section and a mixture of both for a final team round, where each team works together to solve problems. The first rounds are individual rounds in Portland meets, and no talking is allowed.

Our goals include increasing both mathematical flexibility and persistence in finding solutions. Students will also be learning some advanced math and problem solving strategies, along with an expanded math vocabulary. Parent volunteers are always welcome to participate as proctors. Attending a math meet is a unique experience. When was the last time you were in a room with hundreds of children, and no one was talking?

Here are some sample questions:
1) The perimeter of one square is twice that of another . If a side of the larger square is 6 cm long, what is the area of the smaller square?
2) If the ratio of two numbers is 4 to 5, then what will the numerator be in an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 105?

Chorus

(Led by Suki Rice)

Presumpscot School has one of the best elementary school choruses in all of Maine!  (Well, at least the music teacher, Ms. Rice thinks so.)   It is for third, fourth and fifth grade students who love to sing and make great music with others.

The chorus is voluntary and practices each Friday morning before school begins.   We take on a wide variety of music:  folk songs, songs in other languages, show tunes, beautiful music, snappy/jazzy tunes, music with drumming and student-played instruments, sea chanties, serious songs and funny songs, oldies but goodies, songs with harmonies.... a real wide variety.

The chorus puts on two concerts a year (December and May) and usually sings the National Anthem in the Spring for the Sea Dogs.   Often the 5th grade Tone Chime Choir joins with  the Spring Concert.   Ms. Rice believes in challenging the students voices and experience with vocal music so that they become leaders in middle school chorus.   Come and see
them.   They'll knock your socks off.

Student Council

Supervised by Carol Ridlon

Children in grade 4 & 5 are invited to join Student Council which meets in Ms. Ridlon's room on Wednesdays from 12:00 - 12:30.

Our Student Council works on service projects throughout the school year.  The Thanksgiving Food Drive, Holiday Toy Drive and Valentine's for VETs are just a few of the projects that our Student Council plans.  In addition, Student Council members make holiday decorations for the residents of Seaside Nursing Home.

School Store

The school store is run by Student Council members and has been a wonderful part of the school day.  It has been part of Presumpscot School for the past nine years. Students may purchase novelty items between 25¢ and $1.00 that can be used for classwork.  School Store is open on Wednesdays from 8:30 - 8:45.  The profits support school-wide ideas.

Homework Club

Supervised by Gwen Gilman

Homework Club was established to provide a structured environment to children in grades 4 and 5 so they can receive guided assistance in the completion of homework assignments.  It is offered to students who would like some extra assistance in academic areas they are having difficulty with such as math, writing, spelling or just some extra guided reading time.  The club can also be helpful to students who need some help in organizing their homework assignments.

We meet every Thursday from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. in the Presumpscot School library.   It's never too late to sign up for the club, and students are not obligated to attend every Thursday.  If you would like more information regarding this club or would like to sign your child up please contact Ms. Gilman at 874-8220.
