About Our School

ETEP Site

Presumpscot Elementary School has been recognized by the Portland Public Schools as a child centered developmental site for teaching and learning. Presumpscot School is Professional Development Center for the Extended Teacher Education Program (ETEP) at the University of Southern Maine. The interns are college graduates, most of who have been in the professional work environment. Their desire to teach has directed them toward this vigorous teaching training.

Teacher mentors support the interns, sharing knowledge about teaching and learning in an authentic environment and conduct the program in a way that encourages inquiry about the nature of teaching and learning. We are proud to be able to guide and coach future teachers.

Family Literacy Program

Presumpscot School has initiated Readers, Writers and Parents, Learning Together. This positive approach to literacy provides parents with information about literacy development and offers them helpful strategies for assisting their children to become better readers and writers. The importance of reading together and sharing reading for understanding is embraced. Our Instructional Strategist invites parents to learn together to ensure the success of their child(ren). Parents are assisted, as they understand the reading process. Parents learn about the writing process and how to help their youngsters with spelling, proofreading and journal writing. Best of all, parents learn about projects and demonstrations of learning, especially how they can help at home. The best goal of this program is to have fun and enjoy being together as continuous learners.

Student Assistance Team (SAT)

SAT is a faculty organized forum that meets to assure that all children are learning for their future. Nine faculty members recently completed a Resiliency Training that will further support the goals of SAT. Students are supported in a variety of ways including mentor groups, lunches with the teacher and principal, learning relationship building skills, practicing making good decisions, and helping students develop independence.

The work of SAT is aligned with the Learner Expectations at Presumpscot School. When children belong to a group they become collaborative workers. When children build skills to form positive relationships they become effective communicators. When children strengthen their level of independence they become versatile thinkers. When children give of themselves to others, they become involved citizens. When children learn to persevere, they become quality producers. When children develop internal initiative and positive motivation, they become self-directed learners. When children develop a love of learning, they become knowledgeable persons.

Portland Partnership

The Partnership connects parents to schools , community to school and businesses to school. Our volunteering program is impressive and the school is full of volunteers on any given day. From Foster Grandparents, retired seniors, lobstermen, lawyers, people in the neighborhood, the police chief, fire chief and mentors from our business partnerships join hands with us to help all children make it to the finish line.

We are proud to be partners with the Jensen, Baird, Gardner, and Henry law firm at 10 Free Street and MBNA, bankers at the Rainbow Mall.
